Real Madrid are the reigning Spanish La Liga champions but they are in danger of losing the title to city rivals Atletico Madrid who are in search of a first league title in almost a decade. Atletico Madrid have not won the league title since their last triumph at the end of the 2013/14 campaign.

Spanish champions Real Madrid have to beat Europa League finalists Villarreal to have any chance of retaining their league and skipper Sergio Ramos is in line to make his return in that game. Opponents Villarreal are likely to have one eye on their upcoming Europa League final clash with Premier League giants Manchester United in Gdansk, Poland.

Sergio Ramos has battled to stay fit this season and he sustained his latest injury in the Champions League semi-final second leg defeat at Chelsea. The Spanish international was in the Real Madrid team that lost 2-0 to the Blues thanks to goals from Timo Werner and Mason Mount either side of the break. Chelsea booked their place in the Champions League final against Premier League rivals Manchester City courtesy that result. The Blues won the last four tie 3-1 on aggregate at the expense of Real Madrid after the two teams had played out a score draw in the first leg in Madrid.

Real Madrid will end this season without a trophy if they lose the league title.  They will lose that league title if Atletico Madrid beat Real Valladolid away from home on the final day of this season’s La Ligacampaign on Saturday.
